Thanksgiving Day 1

It's November again, so I will start my 30 days of Thankfulness.  Each day this month I will write about something I am thankful for.  Check back often to see how truly good we have it, in spite of challenging circumstances.  And I would love to see in the comments section what you're thankful for each day!!

Today I am thankful for my health.  After having Ezra, I was a little slow to recover...or at least it felt that way!  I couldn't really help take care of Sadie at all, and then I was told that even the little bit that I was doing was too much, and to stop.  It was so hard not to be able to lift her, get her to therapy, help change her diaper, anything.

And I know, I'm only like 2.5 weeks post partum, but my recovery is SO.MUCH.BETTER.  And I am thankful that I can help out again, and lift my girl and snuggle her.

But, she is so big, and she's only going to get bigger.  So, I am thankful that Brian and I are strong and don't have any major back issues (yet).  We are both healthy and will hopefully be able to lift Sadie for many years to come!

Do you have a child who can't walk?  Do you struggle to lift and carry and transport your child?  What do you do for help?  Do you have a plan in place for when your child gets too big to carry?

  1. I am most thankful that after 25 years I can still care for my son Matthew. He has profound cerebral palsy and been through the mill. I can tell you one thing an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Start using turn sheets, get a hospital bed the are higher off ground for your back, you can make it cute! Think about when you need a hoyer lift and start to try to get approved a year before you need it. Save for a wheelchair equipped van roll in roll out!

    1. Sadie's bed is pretty high...but I think a hospital bed is in our future, because it has the rails and the incline (maybe that will help with reflux at night?). Once she's 3, she will be transferred out of the early intervention division at the state and then I think we'll qualify for a lot more help like lifts and home modifications and things!!!

  2. If she has reflux a hospital bed it the answer keep always at 30 degrees! Also good justification for insurance to pay for one. She is young and likely does not qualify for some things yet but planning ahead can really help. When I started this journey nobody could tell me anything and resources were not as abundant. Waiting 1-2 years after you need something is so hard. Champion your cause way before you really need it and it might be there when you do! But oh the battles are so worth it! Every time Matty smiles at me and I realize just how much him and I have overcome I feel amazing! One thing I wish I would have done is keep a journal of every person he every touched without ever saying a word! To say he cannot communicate without a voice is a big mistake! If ever you want or need someone to talk to I am here!

  3. I love the idea of keeping a journal of the people your son has touched without ever saying a word...that's kind of my goal in keeping this blog. I have a feeling we're touching lives without ever meeting them.
